Clean Living for 2022
Disinfectants and cleaning agents that will make your farming life cleaner and safer
We are awash with disinfectant, sanitizers and chemical cleaning products of all kinds in every area of our lives. It has never been more apparent that keeping dirty old germs at bay is essential to our continued good health. This is not news to us in the farming community. We have been beating back the nasty bugs for years as part of our animal care and husbandry round the farm. Keeping cattle sheds, pig house and concrete slatted sheds is an ongoing task for us, year-round. In the winter months, with animals housed, it becomes even more important.
At The Dandy’s Derrynoose we stock a grand range of products to make hosing down and disinfecting around the farm an easier task while still achieving better results. Take the Kenosan product, proven to speed up and improve the cleaning and hosing of cattle sheds, pig houses, poultry houses, concrete slatted sheds as well as many other applications. Having the right tool for the job will always make life a little easier and having a good reliable disinfectant will set your mind at ease too. Now many of you are probably thinking that cleaning out the calf she d now is probably a bit premature as you are months of the first batch of new calves. But new thinking is to get the pens clean and ready well in advance and let them slowly dry out over the coming months.
“Bugs such as crypto and coccidia are lying in wait in these pens, ready for some heat and moisture from a batch of new calves next spring. Before you know it, the vet will be back in the yard next March, dripping calves again.
Now is the time to address the potential threat to calf health by breaking out the fork, shovel, brush and power-washer.
Every bit of faecal material and used hay/straw needs to be removed, even the bits stuffed into the cracks in the floor and the hole in the cavity block.
After that, water, and lots of it. Even if you have to wet down the shed and leave it steep for a day, so be it. Power-wash it to within an inch of its life, and then a little bit more.”
Research has shown that bacteria cultured from cases of mastitis in September have the same DNA as bacteria that were present on cubicles and calving boxes 8-9 months earlier. This shows just how important cleaning and disinfecting sheds at this time of year really is.
