Banishing nasty red, green and black algae from exterior walls
A cold wet and muggy winter and a damp spring has brought the ideal conditions for black, green, and red algae to flourish on our exterior walls. A quick drive around the country shows us houses, sheds and concrete structures with nasty algae spoiling its natural look. The humidity of Irish weather causes algae and fungus to cling to our homes and outhouses and I think we will all agree that it’s a depressing site. At the end of the winter, as we survey our pathways, steps, walls, or patios, removing moss and algae can seem like an endless battle. But the task of banishing unsightly algae and moss from our exterior walls is not too challenging. As always you need the right equipment and a good wee sprayer, and you can tackle those unsightly stains in no time.
At the Dandys Derrynoose, we have a great product in the Mosgo chemical range for effective green and red algae removal. There is a fantastic patio and path cleaner that will power through the job in no time too. Apply the Mosgo algae remover with a spray, remembering to keep to all the safety standards recommended for their use. Any of the sales team here will advise you on the best way to apply the Mosgo and can kit you out with safety gear and a good sprayer if you need it. Mosgo will not only remove the greed or red discolouration, but it will also kill the re-growth of algae and lichen. It is the lichen that is responsible for much of the green and red discolouration that you see on so many homes this time of year. The Algae remover is also great for creating a clean base prior to painting. Mix 1 litre of the product with 5L of water to cover 14m2. Just apply with a sprayer or you can use a brush if you want. Don’t rinse it off and allow it to dry in. A dry spring or autumn day is ideal for getting this particular job done. The Mosgo Green remover is an absolute wizard as a fast and easy way to a clean moss free driveway. No scrubbing! Just apply and walk away. After 3-4 days, the moss on any surface, tarmac, slates driveways etc will simply disappear. Apply the product under conditions of good growth when rain is not expected. Use a sprayer, watering can or brush on. Mix with water, 1L will cover 40m2 where moss growth is light.
Removing unpleasant growths, algae, lichen and moss is not just about making everything look better. Contrary to popular belief, they will not do damage to the actual structures themselves, but it is advisable to remove fungus from surfaces and as they may cause permanent discolouration. On wooden patios and furniture, the moss and algae may contribute to the weathering process. Of course, moss and lichen can make walking on surfaces slippery and are a hazard in terms of health and safety. Cleaning up the unsightly fungi will be an immediate lift to the house and garden and a perfect backdrop for the spring flower displays.
As always, if you need advice on any of the products we sell, our friendly staff at The Dandy’s Derrynoose are more than happy to assist.
