The right tool for the job - Hammer time!

For most of us who work with our hands, whether that’s in farming or the construction industry, having the right tool for the job is not just important. It is essential.

A good fencing pliers can save hours of time on a windy hillside, and a lightweight battery powered nail gun is a game changer for a busy carpenter. Investing in tools that are solid, sturdy and that will last for years makes absolute sense for carpenters, builders and contractors of all kinds.

The humble hammer has been traced back to its first use over 3 million years ago. Naturally, the hammer has been modified over the years, but the basic design is still pretty much the same. The humble hammer remains the most popular, the most common, and most useful hand tool.  Even though power tools have nearly replaced all hand tools, the basic hammer is still king.  Most homes have a multipurpose hammer that is brought out to deal with all manner of tasks from cracking nuts at Halloween to banging nails to hang pictures on the wall. The hammer usually sits in the family toolbox alongside various screwdrivers, spanners and some odd sockets from a long-lost set.  Very often, this hammer is a legacy tool or handed down tool. It came from the ‘home house’ or was the treasures possession of a long departed relative.   As good as it is for general work, it might be time to upgrade to a newer model with a soft grip handle and the strength of fiberglass.

At the Dandy’s Derrynoose, we have a great selection of hammers in a variety of weights, styles and handle materials. Well, we do have a fantastic selection of tools at Ireland’s cheapest prices, so you might expect that the iconic hammer would be in there too! An essential tool for any home or workplace, the claw hammer is an all-round tool that you will find indispensable and will be using it for all kinds of general work!

Of course, we have a great claw hammer for less than a tenner, made from fiberglass, with a carbon-fibre shaft and  a  soft grip handle. It’s an extremely durable tool. The claw can be used to leer floorboards or remove old nails.  This is the hammer that your grandchildren will likely use to drive nails in their home in the future.   A club hammer or lump hammer is a wee beast of a tool.  Its perfect for light demolition work, for driving masonry nails and for hammering in steel chisels.  Often described as a small sledgehammer, the club hammer has a glass-fibre shaft and is fitted with rubber grips, so it has been well improved from the hammers of old, but still does the job.

We have sledgehammers too! The Jefferson brand is well priced and you can swing it like an axe for heavy work such as breaking up concrete or stone. Our ball pien hammers are used for finer work, craftsmanship like rounding off edges of metal pins or rivets.  A more delicate tool which looks very much like a clawhammer but with a domed head instead of a claw.

Buying tried and tested dependable brands means a long life for the tools themselves and a lot less hassle for you.   And when those branded power and hand tools are available at the cheapest price in Ireland, you know you have been to The Dandy’s at Derrynoose.

We have a selection of tools to beat prices and quality  anywhere, whether you are looking for a simple Allen key or a large Gas welder. Check the selection here on the website or drop in to the yard. You are always welcome.
