Rat and mice infestation– alternatives to the trapping method
Around this time of year as the weather chills and the nights draw in, many homes and outhouses become the temporary home of unwanted guests. Field mice, house mice and rats can be a nuisance at the winter draws in. Anyone who has ever woken up to the scratchings of a tiny field mouse in the attic, knows that it sounds more like a giant dinosaur trying to claw its way into the bedroom. The noise of these uninvited lodgers belies the size of their wee bodies. But it is not just their sounds that can become worrisome. Vermin can eat through your electrical cables, your insulation and leave droppings all around the house. A solution must be found and found quickly when there are mice and worse in the house.
Many people want an alternative to traps and the mess that they create. A cat is the obvious solution, but sometimes these animals make peace pacts and live side by side, and sometimes people feel cats are just as much bother in the house. At The Dandys Derrynoose, we have a number of alternative ways of saying goodbye to the pitter patter of those unwanted vermin.
A Sonic Solution
Plug in sonic repeller that sends the mice and rats packing and out the door for a quieter life, but does not upset your own pets.
The Big Cheese Advanced Pest repeller combines swept ultra-sound and electromagnetic action and EMC pulses through wiring to reach nest sites within walls, ceilings and wall cavities. You won’t hear it, but the little divils won’t like it at all. We have a number of options available so drop in and we’ll soon have them running for cover.

Mice and Rat Bait
In a farming household, the likelihood of attracting rats and mice is increased by all the yummy treats you have in the barns and outhouses. Hen food, grain and even the dogs bowl can be very inviting. We stock a number of very effective bait, including the iconic Storm Secure, which will offer an alternative dinner for vermin. Place single dose Storm Secure blocks throughout the infested area, in tamper-resistant bait boxes or at covered bait points. The baits must be securely deposited in a way so there is no the risk of consumption by other animals or children. Where possible secure baits so that they cannot be dragged away. Place the bait stations in places where rats and mice are living and feeding, and that generally means close to holes, on tracks, in concealed spaces such as cavity walls, and in places where the rodents find food or gnaw. If you are worried about young children or inquisitive pets, we stock bait stations which will give you that extra assurance that only those invited to the table, are eating the meal.
For both rats and mice use the pulse baiting technique: check the up-take of bait after 3 days and replace any bait which has been consumed. Repeat after 7 days, and then at 7 day intervals and move any untouched bait to active areas.
Expanding Foam
Racumin is another option that you may consider when deterring rats and mice from coming into your house of barn. Expandable foam offers an alternative method to control rat and mouse infestations. Unlike baits which are reliant on palatability for uptake, it works with the rodent's natural grooming habits and can be placed in locations such as cavity walls, where traditional baiting methods are not possible.
