Wrapping up warm for the winter
We can learn a lot from our forefathers in how to keep warm during the winter. At a time when houses were not properly insulated and central heating was not yet invented, they had ways of keeping warmer during the winter months. They may have shivered from time to time and chilblains and sniffles might have been an issue, but if we pick and choose from their coping tips, we too can save on energy and be a little warmer in the months ahead.
Layering up
One of the best ways of keeping warm is to layer up on the clothes. Two pairs of socks in the wellies and an underlayer of thermals before the jumper goes will trap warm between the layers and Our parents and grandparents missed out on all the scientific advancements that have made clothing warmer, water resistant, wind resistant and generally more suitable for wild winds than anything they could have hoped for. Nowadays, we have stylish jackets that are windproof, waterproof, in a stretch fabric that is designed to be breathable for ease of wear. These modern jackets are made for the worst that the cold weather season can throw at you. The Regatta range is similarly easy to wear, and layer up while being reasonable priced. The perfect option for when the temperature dips and when you need protection. The best item of clothing for layering up is the body warmers. These lightweight and attractive items will keep the core of the body warm and your arms free, making it easier to get on with your work.
Hands and feet:
And that brings us to the toes and extremities. This is where the cold bites first. Double up on the socks and have a good pair of slippers for comfort round the house. The generations before us knitted their socks and it has to be said that there was great heat in a hand knit sock. There was a bit of itchiness too! At the Dandy’s, Derrynoose, we would shock that generation with the magic of our thermal socks that keep a foot as dry and comfy as you could imagine. Team with matching gloves with a 2.3 tog rating and guaranteed warmth.
Head
Did you know that you can lose 40-50% heat through your head and neck. Keep your head covered in then bad weather. Like good attic insulation, it will prevent the loss of the heat you already have! At the Dandy’s Derrynoose, we recommend the heat machine beanie hats Tried and tested for keeping your head warm. If you have to venture out on stormy evenings into the fields or draughty outhouses, keep the head warm with a good jacket from our range of workwear clothing with excellent hoods attached. Pop on a hat, pull up the hood and tie securely round the neck (layering up on the old head now!) and you can get on with your outdoor work knowing that the rain will not be dripping down the back of your neck. I have shivers even thinking about it!
Listening to the news these days with the constant talk of this winter’s impending energy crisis can be a bit of a downer. Most of us have gotten through harsh winters in before and we all know how to keep warm and cosy. An old-fashioned hot water bottle, a good big mug of steaming hot chocolate and a roaring fire and you cannot go far wrong. At the Dandy’s Derrynoose, we have great value in solid fuel and home heating oil and if you have to venture out into the sideways rain, we stock plenty of warm, waterproof and thermal clothes to keep you warm and dry. Drop in and see us no matter what the weather, and you will be sure of a hearty old-fashioned welcome and service, with the most up to date, practical thermal workwear.
